Who ever heard of holding a high school reunion over Christmas? Just the thought of leaving your loved ones behind to spend your holiday with people you have not seen in ages sounds absurd. However, it seems to be the perfect backdrop for Lee Warren’s latest Christmas novella, The Reunion.
Thirty years have passed since the Moffat High School class of 1986 have been together. How much have those twelve high school seniors changed over the years? Did they accomplish their hopes and dreams or are they stuck somewhere in life wishing they could turn back the clock?
The Reunion is the second book in author Lee Warren’s Mercy Inn series. Warren once again captures the reader with his well thought out plot set in the peaceful and secluded Mercy Inn. Festive events and emotions fill the pages along with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep the reader engaged. What starts out as a quiet carefully planned reunion turns into chaos and potential danger when an unexpected visitor arrives.
Warren is a master at developing real life characters, characters that you identify with, that touch your heart. In this case there are three, Zoey, Matt and Tommy. Having arrived out of curiosity, they each quickly discover that they are looking for more. But do they know what?
The Reunion is not your typical Christmas story. As each scene unfolds, we see the characters revealing more and more of themselves and in doing so we recognize how circumstances in our own lives impact who we become.
Woven throughout Warren’s story are touches of traditional Christmas values, stories within the story. He reminds us of what Christmas was meant to be, whether we are with our biological families or with families made up of friends and sometimes strangers. Ray, the innkeeper, reads the Christmas story from Luke, carols were sung, memories were shared, and new dreams were birthed.
Could Mercy Inn be more than a mythological place in Lee Warren’s imagination? Are innkeepers Ray and Alma actually angels on a Christmas mission? We may never know for sure but if you are looking for a delightful read that will fill your heart with happiness and hope this Christmas then, I encourage you to get a copy of The Reunion and join in the fun.
